Searching for “waterproof fabric for outdoor furniture covers” will pull up everything from heavy-duty PVC to recycled polyester. You’ll also see “China PP mesh fabric” and occasionally stumble into “Arvind clothing brands India online shopping” because someone thought a cotton shirt mill could do marine-grade fabrics.
I get it. As a quality compliance manager—I review roughly 300+ textile specs a year—I’ve seen this confusion ruin projects. In my Q1 2024 audit, we rejected 23% of first-sample deliveries because the spec didn’t match the actual use case. Not because the fabric was bad. Because it was the wrong fabric.

Scenario A: Permanent outdoor furniture covers (sun, rain, UV)
If you’re buying covers for patio sofas that stay outside 365 days a year, your enemy isn’t just water. It’s UV degradation. I still kick myself for not specifying breathability in my 2022 canopy order. We used a standard PU-coated polyester (1,800mm hydrostatic head). It worked for rain—until the humidity trapped underneath rotted the wooden frame in 14 months. The lesson: a waterproof membrane alone isn’t enough.
What works: PTFE-laminated polyester or a silicone-coated fabric with microporous vents. Hydrostatic head should be 1,500mm+, but the fabric also needs MVTR (moisture vapor transmission rate) of 200 g/m²/24h or more. For budget: ask for polyester with a breathable PU coating—not a solid PVC lam.

Scenario C: Lightweight furniture covers (for storage, not constant exposure)
Now, if you’re making covers that go on furniture only during off-season storage (3-4 months), the requirements are looser. You don’t need expensive UV stabilizers. You don’t need high hydrostatic head. Your biggest risk is mold from trapped moisture—which means breathability is your #1 priority.
What works: Uncoated polyester (150-200 gsm) with a stamped water-repellent finish (DWR). That will handle light rain during storage. If you really want waterproof, a 300mm hydrostatic head is enough—but add a taped seam at the bottom. (Taped seams: that’s where I see the most rejects from online printers. In Q1 2024, 12% of cover samples had seams leaking because the tape was applied at the wrong temperature.)
For this use case, “China PP mesh fabric” actually works—it’s lightweight, breathable, cheap. Just don’t expect it to rainproof for more than a season. How to pick your scenario

- Is it a canopy/awning with a structure underneath? → Use Scenario B. Prioritize breathability (MVTR 200+) and a hydrostatic head of 1,500mm. Ask for PTFE or microporous PU coating.
- Is it for seasonal storage only? → Use Scenario C. Save money with uncoated polyester or quality PP mesh (like the “China PP mesh fabric” you found). DWR finish is enough—don’t overpay.
One more thing: in my experience, people almost always over-spec for scenario C and under-spec for scenario A. Check which category you fall into. The price difference between a 300mm HH fabric and a 1,200mm HH fabric is about 40%—but the cheaper one will fail within a year if you use it full-time.
